To access the boss, you'll need to find the large courtyard near the far end of the Undead Settlement. You can complete the entire game without ever having to fight it - that being said, if you skip the Greatwood fight, you won't be able to forge Boss weapons back at the Firelink Shrine. Technically, the Curse-Rotted Greatwood is an optional boss.
